Propane tank catches fire amid historic McCaysville flooding
A propane tank caught fire in flood-ravaged McCaysville Thursday morning, creating another hazard for emergency crews responding to historic flooding along the Toccoa River. Officials moved people away from the area and planned to let the tank burn itself out. The river reportedly crested at a record 18 feet and has begun receding, possibly dropping as much as 3 feet. Rescue crews estimate 30 to 40 people have been brought to safety, but others remain stranded, including some who may have sought refuge on rooftops. The flooding comes just months after an August flash flood damaged city buildings, including the police department and post office, which had only reopened last week. Officials say cleanup could take considerable time as crews continue searching for stranded residents. FOX 5 Atlanta's Marc Teichner reporting live from the scene.
