Best snow movies for kids
Frozen and Frozen II: Come on! Did you really think we would start off this list with anything other than Frozen? While we're all waiting for "The Great Thaw" here in metro Atlanta and North Georgia, you can tag along with Princess Anna on her journey to find her sister and save Arendelle from an eternal winter.
If you start the movie early enough, the kids will probably want to stay up a little longer for Frozen II. Both films are streaming on Disney+.
Mr. Popper's Penguins: Next up is a hilarious movie based on a classic children's book. Imagine living in the swankiest apartment in the middle of New York City without a care in the world. Your only responsibility is staying on top of your career as a successful real estate developer. Everything's perfect, until your late father sends you one last parting gift: a penguin!
You should be able to watch it on HBO Max.
Home Alone: If you didn't get enough of it during the holiday season, Home Alone is always a great option! Poor Kevin McCallister can't catch a break. His parents forgot all about him as they rushed to make their Christmas flight to Paris. Good thing this 8-year-old has amazing survival instincts. He's more than prepared to protect his family's Chicago home from a pair of ruthless robbers. You can watch Home Alone, and all of its sequels, on Disney+.
By the way, actors Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song recently revealed the name of their adorable 2-year-old son, Carson!
Ice Age: Remember when the earth was covered in glaciers and woolly mammoths roamed the land? Of course, you don't. That was the Ice Age! This hilarious movie takes us on a journey with a trio of animals determined to return a human baby to his father. Parents, be alert. This movie contains mild language.
This movie, and its sequels, are on Disney+.
Snow Dogs: When a dentist from Miami finds out he not only was adopted, but he also has an inheritance to claim from his birth mother, he hops on a plane to a state that couldn't be more opposite to his beloved, hot Florida: Alaska! Little does this dentist know, the inheritance has nothing to do with money. Instead, he is now the owner of seven Siberian Huskies … who can't stand him. This funny, family-friendly movie is streaming on Disney+.
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: If the little ones love fantasy, give this one a try. Four siblings are evacuated from London during World War II, and find themselves living with an old professor who seems to have a secret. A magical wardrobe in his house leads them to a mystical world called "Narnia." This one also streams on Disney+.
Bonus points, the film is based on the hit novel written by C.S. Lewis. If they kids are fans of the movie, they can also read the book!
Best snow movies after the kids go to bed
Into the Wild: What does it really mean to be happy? Do you have to be embedded in society, have all the money in the world and all the nicest things to achieve it? Based on the real 1990 story of Christopher McCandless, "Into the Wild" follows a recent college graduate who decides to abandon his worldly possessions, give away all his money and embark on a journey across America to find the true meaning of life. What he discovers may make you cry. This film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
By the way, the book is even better than the movie!
Society of the Snow: Let's give you a thriller with a history lesson! Here's another movie based on a true story. This 2023 Netflix movie follows the 1972 Andes plane crash involving Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. The survivors, who mostly consist of members of a rugby team, struggle to make it in the harsh conditions of the Andes Mountains. What will they do when their food supply runs low and Mother Nature is unforgiving?
The Ice Road: When a remote diamond mine in Canada collapses, trapping a group of miners underground, a group of experienced ice road truckers is called to lead the dangerous rescue mission. Not only are they in a race against time to save the miners, but their lives could be in danger as well as the ice they're traveling on begins to melt.
This action-packed thriller with plenty of twists and turns is streaming on Netflix.
Interstellar: Okay, this one has absolutely nothing to do with the winter. But, it's a beautifully captured film that just might change your life! Cooper, a former NASA pilot-turned-farmer, is pulled back into space travel when he's challenged to find a new habitable planet to save humanity from environmental decline.
Without giving away the plot, this movie deals with love, sacrifice, betrayal and plays with the nature of time and scientific concepts, like relativity. It'll take you on a thought-provoking, emotional rollercoaster and give you a cinematic experience like nothing you've ever witnessed before. Interstellar is available on Netflix, Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video.
The Shining: "Here's Johnny!" It's only right that we finish our list with this psychological winter horror flick. Based on Stephen King's novel, "The Shining" is about a Colorado hotel with a terrifying, supernatural past. Everyone can feel it. Too bad five-year-old Danny is the only one who can see it. This classic is available on Amazon Prime Video.
