Student stabbed at North Atlanta High School

A student was stabbed at North Atlanta High School Friday morning, according to Atlanta Public Schools officials. A video obtained by FOX 5 appears to show the student getting stabbed in the eye with a pair of scissors.

A student was hospitalized Friday morning after being stabbed multiple times during a fight at North Atlanta High School, prompting a brief lockdown and renewed concerns from parents about campus safety.

What we know:

Atlanta Public Schools confirmed the incident involved two students and happened outside the cafeteria shortly after school started. The student who was stabbed was treated at a local hospital, and the other student involved was detained. APS said classes resumed after the lockdown was lifted and there was no ongoing threat.

"This was an isolated incident involving only the two students. No other students were involved, and there is no ongoing threat to students or staff. Normal school operations have continued," APS said in a statement.

Reports of the stabbing came in around 9:30 a.m. SKYFOX 5 video showed school police investigating the scene near the campus off Northside Parkway.

FOX 5 has obtained video of the incident. It appears the student was stabbed multiple times in an eye during a fight with a pair of scissors. APS confirmed the student's injuries came from scissors but didn't say where the student was stabbed.

Editor's Note: FOX 5 is not showing the video because of its sensitive nature.

Following the fight, school officials treated the injured student and secured the area where the fight happened.

The school was placed on lockdown for a short period, but classes have returned to normal, according to the school district.

According to APS, the student involved in the incident was detained. Atlanta Police said the school district's police force is handling the investigation.

What they're saying:

Student Kamya Lowe said the confrontation escalated quickly.

"It started off as a fight, and then he grabbed his, scissors," Lowe said.

Lowe said the victim did not fight back and described the scene as chaotic.

"He grabbed his scissors and started stabbing away. And he didn't he didn't try to fight back because he's not an aggressive person at all. So when he was on the floor, he was just on the like. He didn't try to fight back at all, like he was just sitting there and everybody was in there recording him," Lowe said.

Lowe also said the student who was stabbed is a special needs student known to classmates.

"I made TikToks with him. I talked to him like he's, he's a pretty cool person. Nobody has a problem with him because, you know, like, we take in consideration of his, disability. So we don't ever be mean to him. He's sweet," Lowe said.

Parents said the lockdown and reports of violence were frightening, especially for families who learned about the incident while their children were still inside the school.

"My daughter is calling me frantic, scared saying they are on shutdown," one woman said.

Another parent who spoke with FOX 5 said the incident brought back painful memories, saying one of her children had also been stabbed at the school last year.

"It's scary. It's very scary. I mean my kids come here. My son was going here last year. He graduated last year. Well this year. And he was stabbed as well here at the school with during an altercation with another young man," she said. "You send your kids to school thinking that they're gonna be okay and something like this happens."

Another parent added, "Prayers to the big prayers to him and his family."

Dig deeper:

Friday’s stabbing is the second reported scissor attack on the campus this year. In April, another student was hospitalized after being stabbed during a fight.

Despite metal detectors and other security measures in place, some parents questioned whether more needs to be done to keep students safe.

"It's scary. Send your kids to school thinking that they're going to be okay and something like this happens," said Yuvonka Stephens, a concerned parent.

What we don't know:

Authorities have not released the exact charges the detained student may face or when charges will be filed.

Officials have not disclosed the condition of the injured student beyond confirming hospitalization.

Investigators have not said what led to the fight or whether additional security changes will follow.

What's next:

Charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
