South Fulton police officer charged for alleged sexual assault

A South Fulton Police officer has been arrested and charged in connection with a sexual assault, according to the department.

What we know:

Police said Micheal Shealey Cockran, 30, was arrested by his own department after being accused of sexual assault. He was charged with sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority and violation of oath of office.

Cockran was relieved of his duty and is currently being booked into the Fulton County Jail.

South Fulton police said the case is under investigation but have not released any more information. 

What they're saying:

"No one is above the law. These actions represent a serious violation of the law, department policy, and the trust placed in our officers by the community. The South Fulton Police Department holds its personnel to the highest standards, and we will not tolerate conduct that betrays the badge or the public we serve," said Interim Public Safety Director, Dr. Alexander.

What we don't know:

At this time, the date of the alleged rape or where it happened has not been released.
