GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a former commission candidate fatally shot his wife before shooting himself at their home in north Georgia.

A statement from the Hall County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday said 45-year-old Troy Phillips and 42-year-old Heather Phillips each died of one gunshot.

Authorities have said a friend found the couple dead in their Chicopee Village home early Thursday.

The statement says the case remains under investigation.

Troy Phillips lost to incumbent Jeff Stowe in a race for the District 4 seat on the Hall County Board of Commissioners in May. Troy Phillips' campaign website says he is a 10-year combat veteran. He also served in the Persian Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
