Savannah man attacked by fake Amazon delivery drivers, police say

Savannah police are searching for two people accused of pretending to be Amazon delivery drivers to get into a victim's home.

Home invasion in Savannah

What we know:

Investigators say the home invasion happened around 8 a.m. on Jan. 11 on the 500 block of Price Street in Savannah.

According to WSAV, 66-year-old bartender Dirk Hardison heard a knock on his door, saw two men he believed were Amazon drivers, and opened the door.

When Hardison opened the door, the men reportedly forced their way into his home and hit him on the head.

Savannah police shared surveillance video of two men wearing jackets that looked very similar to those worn by Amazon drivers. One of the men was carrying a package.

In the video, you can hear Hardison screaming for help as the two men run away.

Hardison was transported to the hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries.

What we don't know:

Police have not yet identified the two men but told WSAV they believed that this was a targeted crime.

What they're saying:

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson responded to the attack during a press conference on Tuesday.

"Be careful. You should never open the door for folks that you don’t know. You shouldn’t accept deliveries from stuff you’re not expecting. And if in doubt, lead them out. If in doubt, call the police and have this issue addressed," he said.

What you can do:

A GoFundMe has been set up for Hardison following the attack. It has since raised more than $12,000. You can donate here.
