Rome Middle School student detained over social media threat
ROME, Ga. - A Rome Middle School student was detained on Tuesday following an investigation by the Rome City Police and Rome City Schools into a potential threat made on social media. Officials said the incident, which remains under investigation, highlights the importance of student and staff safety.
"We take all threats to our schools seriously. There is a no-tolerance policy for anyone threatening violence or harm at a school," Rome City Police Chief Denise Downer-McKinney said in a statement. "These threats are not jokes, and the Rome Police Department will take appropriate action."
The Rome Police Department reinforced its stance on school safety and encouraged the community to report any concerning behavior. "We take threats of violence and school safety very seriously. If you or someone you know is witness to written or spoken threats of violence or destruction, please call 9-1-1, the Anonymous Crime Tip Line at 706-236-5000, or the Rome Police Department at 706-238-5111," the department posted on its Facebook page.
The department also urged parents to monitor their children’s online activities. "PARENTS — monitor your child's social media. Be nosey. You don't have to be their friend — you have to be their protector," the Facebook post read.
The investigation is ongoing, and no further details were immediately available.
