'Targeted' shooting leaves 1 dead, 2 injured along Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard

The search is on for the gunmen who killed a 19-year-old, and injured two others in what Atlanta police are calling a targeted drive-by shooting in the 300 block of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard SW.

Officers responded to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Windsor Street SW.

Three people were found, all with gunshot wounds, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

One person was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition. That person later died.

The other two were awake and speaking to officers as they were taken to the hospital for treatment.

"We believe the suspects were inside a vehicle. That's going to be a white sedan," said Atlanta Police Homicide Commander Lt. Germain Dearlove.

The three men, between the ages of 19 to 21 years old, tried to run for safety. They only made it a few yards before collapsing outside Kanesha King's home, which is right on the corner.

"I just heard gunshots. I thought it was fireworks because they've been shooting fireworks all weekend," said King.

When King walked out of her house she found a young man on her porch. He had been shot. She said two other men were in her yard. They also had bullet wounds.

Medics rushed all three to the hospital.

The names of those who were shot have not been released.

Investigators spent hours talking to witnesses and collecting bags of evidence at the scene.

"This is a very serious matter for us, we have our top unit with the Atlanta Police Department investigating, and we will find these people involved," said Lt. Dearlove.

Word of the shooting quickly spread through the neighborhood.

"I went to school with them, we grew up together and it's sad. Please stop killing and put the guns down," said Makayla, who lives in the neighborhood.

"It's not the neighborhood, it's the world. Too many guns. guns for no reason," said King.

Detectives with the APD Homicide Unit were still piecing together what led to the shooting and a description of the shooter.
