Rapper Pooh Shiesty and eight co-conspirators are facing federal kidnapping charges following a violent armed robbery at a Dallas music studio in January.

Gucci Mane label studio ‘armed takeover’

What we know:

Federal prosecutors say Lontrell Williams Jr., known as Pooh Shiesty, arranged a January 10 meeting at a Dallas studio to discuss his contract with Gucci Mane’s 1017 Records. Once the victims arrived, prosecutors say Williams Jr. and eight others executed a "coordinated, armed takeover."

Authorities allege Williams Jr. used an AK-style pistol to force a victim to sign a contract release while others robbed the group of Rolex watches, jewelry, and cash. One victim was reportedly choked to near unconsciousness while another defendant barricaded the door. Investigators used Williams Jr.’s federal ankle monitor data and social media posts to link the group to the crime.

What we don't know:

The U.S. Attorney’s Office has not released the full names of the victims, identifying them only by initials in court documents. It is also unclear if the signed contract release is considered legally void following the alleged duress.

Heavy hitters in the rap world

The backstory:

Pooh Shiesty was on federal home confinement for a previous firearms conspiracy conviction in Florida at the time of the Dallas incident. He is signed to 1017 Records, a label owned by Atlanta rap pioneer Gucci Mane. Gucci Mane, legal name Radric Davis, is a pioneer of trap music in Atlanta and has recently emphasized sobriety and stability following a career of high-profile music releases and personal evolution.

Federal prosecutors promise 'vigorous' case

What they're saying:

"The victims in this case came to Dallas to conduct legitimate business and they were met with firearms and violence," said Ryan Raybould, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas. "For anyone contemplating using violence and intimidation as a business practice, I’m here to tell you that it will be vigorously investigated and prosecuted."
