Argument over gun leads to Christmas Eve shooting in southwest Atlanta

A man was shot after a fight with a neighbor in southwest Atlanta on Christmas Eve, according to police.

What we know:

Officers responded to the 2900 block of Ridgeview Drive SW around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after calls about a shooting. When they arrived, they found a man who had been shot in the buttocks.

The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Police said the shooter stayed on the scene and claimed the other man had flashed a gun at him before the shooting.

The shooter was detained and interviewed by police before being released.

The backstory:

The two men knew each other and had been in an ongoing argument, according to police. They both rent at the same complex and were inside one of the apartments when an argument turned into a physical fight.

Police said the shooter claimed the other man showed a gun during the dispute, which led to a struggle over the weapon. The shooter then pulled out his own gun and fired toward the ground, which is how police say the man was struck.

What's next:

So far, no charges have been filed, but police said that could change after they interview the person who was shot.
