Man arrested for setting fire to Sanford temple, high-speed chase, officials say

A Georgia man is accused of starting a fire at a Sanford Buddhist temple and then leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through several counties before being arrested.

Singhasouk "Danny" Phanouvong, 51, faces arson and several other charges after a fire was set at the Wat Navaram Buddhist Temple, according to officials.

What we know:

Sanford police responded to the temple on Narcissus Avenue just after 9:30 p.m. on Saturday after reports of a person trying to set the building on fire.

When officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as Phanouvong, at the scene and attempted to talk with him. But Phanouvong fled the scene in Toyota Rav4, according to a police report.

Singhasouk Phanouvong, 51, faces several charges, including arson and flee and eluding law enforcement.

Multi-county, high-speed chase

Officers pursued the vehicle through Seminole, Volusia and Flagler counties. Other law enforcement agencies, including the Volusia County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol were called to assist.

During the pursuit, Phanouvong reportedly drove 115 mph on Interstate-4.

The pursuit ended in St. John's County after a trooper used a PIT maneuver, according to an FHP arrest report.

Phanouvong was arrested and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail.

He faces multiple charges, including burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, resisting without violence, and fleeing and eluding law enforcement.

Sanford temple thanks law enforcement, community

Sanford Fire Rescue responded to the temple and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. 

The temple released a statement thanking law enforcement for their response.

"Wat Navaram Bhuddists Temple is deeply saddened by the vandalism of our place of worship. Although shaken, our community is grateful for the quick response by local law enforcement and thankful for all the well wishes and support from around the globe."
