SWAT standoff shuts down East Atlanta Road

The Henry County Police Department issued an emergency traffic alert after officially closing down a major section of East Atlanta Road, just north of Thurman Road. A specialized SWAT team has completely surrounded a home along Great Oaks Branch, where a barricaded suspect is actively refusing to comply with law enforcement commands to surrender.

A heavy law enforcement presence, including a SWAT response, prompted the closure of part of East Atlanta Road in Henry County on Monday.

What we know:

The Henry County Police Department responded to a domestic incident just before 9 a.m. Monday in the 100 block of Great Oaks Branch in Stockbridge. 

When officers arrived, they learned that a person inside the home was possibly armed and refusing to leave the property.

Law enforcement officers immediately surrounded the home and secured the immediate area. 

The situation escalated into an active standoff, prompting officials to close down East Atlanta Road, north of Thurman Road, at around 10:30 a.m. 

Multiple police officers were seen combing the area well into the afternoon as specialized teams negotiated with the barricaded individual.

The standoff came to a peaceful conclusion around 2 p.m. Monday when authorities confirmed that the involved suspect had officially surrendered to police on the scene.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the barricaded suspect or disclosed any specific criminal charges stemming from the incident. It also remains unknown what originally sparked the initial domestic dispute or if anyone else was trapped inside the home during the standoff.
