Fire crews battle massive Buckhead apartment fire

ATLANTA - Fire crews are working to determine what caused a massive fire at a Northeast Atlanta apartment complex that damaged or destroyed 32 units and displaced up to 80 people.

FOX 5 viewer Justin Murray sent in a video showing flames and smoke billowing from the 711 Lindbergh Apartments complex in Atlanta.

Crews said 911 calls came in shortly after noon; when firefighters arrived, they found the top two floors of the four-story building in flames.

FOX 5 has received several images capturing the flames ripping through the roof of the building.

Residents said they saw smoke and flames, and yelled for people to get out.

"We saw this black smoke, and started bamming on people's doors, 'Fire, fire, get out, get out!'" Michelle Seay said, as she grabbed her dog out of her apartment and ran to get others out, too.

Firefighters told FOX 5, it was difficult to fight the blaze with a lack of water from lines in the area, and the size of the fire.

"We did have challenges with the water supply and water pressure. We had to go to large water mains on the main roads to get adequate water," said Assistant Chief Chris Wessels with the Atlanta Fire Department.

Crews worked into the evening to put out embers, watch for hotspots and investigate the cause.

It's unclear what may have started the fire or where it originated.

The American Red Cross assisted 11 people, 10 adults and one child.  Several residents have rental insurance and declined services provided by The Red Cross.

Caseworkers provided financial assistance for those helped to purchase emergency essentials, like a place to stay, food, clothing and shoes. The health staff also assisted residents with replacing items like eye glasses, dentures and prescription medications.
