Deadly crash in Jackson County on I-85

A fatal crash shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 85 in Jackson County early Monday, causing major traffic delays and prompting officials to urge drivers to avoid the area.

A fatal crash temporarily shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 85 in Jackson County early Monday morning, causing major traffic delays.

What we know:

According to SkyFOX Traffic, all southbound lanes were closed near Highway 129 as authorities investigated the deadly crash and worked at the scene.

Motorists traveling through the area were advised to avoid the stretch of I-85 southbound altogether and use Route 124 as an alternate route. Traffic was backed up for up to 11 miles at one point. 

Shortly before 7 a.m., traffic began moving again although not all lanes were yet open. 

Shortly after, Georgia State Patrol provided additional details about the incident. 

According to GSP, their investigation revealed a Ford van and a Kenworth tractor-trailer collided shortly before 2:46 a.m. The driver of the Ford van was pronounced dead at the scene. Their Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating and will determine the cause of the collision. 

What we don't know:

The name of the driver who was killed has not been released at this time.
