Woman shot in chest before SWAT standoff on Championship Court

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. - A domestic violence dispute turned violent Wednesday afternoon when a man shot someone and barricaded himself inside a Fayetteville home, drawing a massive police response. 

Clayton County police officers swarmed the neighborhood to rescue the victim and safely take the shooter into custody.

What we know:

Clayton County police officers rushed to the 100 block of Championship Court in Fayetteville around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Authorities received emergency calls reporting that an individual was shot during a domestic dispute. 

First responders found the person shot in the chest. Once stabilized, medics rushed the victim to a nearby hospital in stable condition. 

The gunman locked himself inside the home and refused to come outside, prompting a standoff with arriving police forces. Responders could not establish communication with the individual despite going through proper channels and obtaining search warrants.

Eventually, officers had to make entry into the home with a truck. The suspect was detained without further incident, and authorities noted that no other gunshots were fired during the standoff.

What we don't know:

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute, but officials have not yet confirmed the exact relationship between the victim and the suspect. Authorities have not released the names or ages of the shooter or the victim. 

Police have not stated what specific charges the suspect will face. It is also unclear what kind of gun was used or how many times the victim was shot before she escaped the home.
