Sisters shot near Georgia State University

What we know:

The shooting happened late Sunday at the BP station at John Wesley Dobbs Avenue and Piedmont Avenue, where the sisters were working security. Investigators said their father, a tow truck driver, was in the process of removing an SUV from the property when the owner became irate. Officers said the driver got into a heated argument, then slammed the tow truck operator to the ground before running north on John Wesley Dobbs.

Both daughters chased after him. About a half block away, in a nearby church parking lot, police said the confrontation escalated again. That is where the SUV driver pulled out a gun and shot both women. Their father did not require hospitalization.

The gas station has a history of violence. It was shut down in 2024 after a deadly shooting and has seen several violent incidents in recent years. The location sits close to GSU student housing and has long raised safety concerns among students.

Gunfire along Wesley Dobbs Avenue described

What they're saying:

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted.

"We went out on the porch, and we heard a few gunshots," said Kevaughn Hickman. He said the sound was at first hard to identify. "I thought it was backfiring because a lot of times out here you'll hear a lot of hellcats, you know a lot of cars with noises backfiring but once it was consistent we knew it was gunfire."

Another witness, Christian Laguerre, said he immediately ran. "I was just kind of scared. I didn't really know what to think, It was just kind of almost like a fight or flight response, and I was like I kinda just got to get out of here."

Students said they were not surprised to hear about another shooting nearby. "I wasn't surprised. When I seen it, it's probably like the 3rd or 4th time since I've been here," said junior Myles Gibson. He added, "I just go to class and go home. I don't just stand around in this area because it's honestly not safe."
