Legendary high school football coach Buck Godfrey dies at 83
William "Buck" Godfrey, the legendary former Southwest DeKalb High School football coach and winningest Black football coach in Georgia history, has passed away at the age of 83. During his 30-year tenure from 1983 to 2012, Coach Godfrey amassed a county-record 273 wins, led the Panthers to the 1995 GHSA AAAA State Championship, and sent hundreds of student-athletes to college on scholarships. He is remembered not only for his hall-of-fame achievements on the field but for his profound mentorship, character building, and lasting legacy off of it.
