U.S. Debt tops $31 trillion as Trump expands retirement access
With the 2026 midterm elections just six months away, the United States has reached a sobering fiscal milestone. For the first time since World War II, the national debt has surpassed the size of the entire U.S. economy. New data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) reveals that at the end of March 2026, the national debt climbed to $31.27 trillion, while the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) trailed slightly at $31.22 trillion. This puts the debt-to-GDP ratio at over 100%, roughly double the historical average.
