I-285 Westside to fully shut down this weekend
Prepare for what transportation officials are calling a "historic" traffic event. Starting on Friday, May 8, 2026, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will implement a full closure of I-285 on the Westside. All northbound and southbound lanes will be shut down between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (Exit 9) and Cascade Road (Exit 7). The closure is expected to trigger region-wide gridlock, impacting not just the perimeter, but the Downtown Connector, I-20, and local surface streets across Southwest Atlanta.
