Rare Ebola strain spreads as WHO declares emergency

Public health officials are scrambling to contain a deadly new outbreak of a rare Ebola strain sweeping through Central Africa. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared the crisis a Global Health Emergency, following more than 300 suspected cases and approximately 80 deaths across the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring Uganda. Closer to home, the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it is actively working to evacuate a small number of Americans currently in the affected region. However, federal health officials emphasize that the risk to the broader U.S. public remains exceptionally low.
