Historic election reshapes Georgia's political future
Georgia voters made history in the 2026 midterm elections, delivering major victories for Democrats and reshaping the state's political future. Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson to become Georgia's first female governor and the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history, ending nearly 25 years of Republican control of the governor's office. Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff won reelection over Republican Mike Collins, while Democrats Josh McLaurin, Penny Brown Reynolds and Tonya Miller captured the lieutenant governor, secretary of state and attorney general races. The election marked several historic firsts and set the stage for a major shift in Georgia's leadership when the newly elected officials take office in January.
