VILLA RICA, Ga. - Police are searching for a man in black SUV who injured and officer when he tried to flee from police.
Villa Rica Police said it happened at the Villa Rica Walmart around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday. Officer Micahiah Swain was investigating a stolen cell phone case and the phone was traced back to the Walmart, where the suspect was attempting to use a stolen credit card. The man he was talking to, identified as 37-year-old Clifford Bernard Neal, said he needed to get his ID out of his black Mercedes SUV, but instead, police said the man tried to flee the scene.
Police said the officer and Neal got into a struggle before trying to take off. Police said Neal began to drive away with Swain inside the vehicle and that's when the officer deployed a Taster, and the suspect crashed into a parked car. According to investigators, the suspect was able to pull the Taser wires loose.
"Officer Swain was thrown from the vehicle as it was backing up," a police news release said. "When the suspect vehicle began to pull forward, Officer Swain fired several shots at the vehicle."
Officer Swain was taken to the hospital and treated for injured to his leg. Investigators said Neal was possibly struck by a round that ricocheted off the vehicle. A witness was also treated for an injury to the leg.
Warrants have been issued for Neal on various charges including aggravated assault, battery against police officer, giving false name, hit and run and several others.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is being brought in to look into the shooting.
