Tennessee county to sue city over school system funding

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - A county commission in Tennessee has voted to file a lawsuit against a city for reallocating local option sales tax revenue away from the county school system and to the city's general fund.

The Jackson Sun reports (http://bit.ly/2qVu2d3 ) the Madison County Commission will file a lawsuit against the City of Jackson and ask for an injunction on the reallocation of the $12 million that has been donated to the Jackson-Madison County School System since 1990. The city council passed the reallocation resolution May 18.

Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris says the city has violated an agreement enshrined by a 1989 referendum. Harris says Madison County would have to replace the $12 million by raising taxes.

Jackson City Attorney Lewis Cobb says the agreement is not a legally binding contract.
