GILMER COUNTY, Ga. - A school bus crashed in Gilmer County on Tuesday morning, according to Gilmer County Sheriff's Office.
What we know:
The sheriff's office said there were 5 students and the driver on the bus at the time of the crash, which took place on White Path Road.
Medical personnel responded to the scene and the road was shut down in the area until the scene could be cleared. Motorists were asked to avoid the area.
The sheriff's office later sent out a release that said the driver told them he had turned around to speak with a child on the bus when he failed to stay in the travel lane and ran off the right side of the road.
The 2026 Freightliner bus traveled down an embankment and struck a tree.
There were two 5-year-olds, one 7-year-old, one 8-year-old, and one 10-year-old on the bus. They were all transported to a hospital, along with the driver, with minor injuries.
The driver was cited for distracted driving, according to the Georgia Highway Patrol.
