DeKalb County Police confirm a 26-year-old man is behind bars after he allegedly brutally assaulted his 8-year-old nephew.

"The suspect is currently in the DeKalb County Jail," DeKalb County Police Lieutenant Lonzy Robertson said.

Raphael Wright was arrested Wednesday during a traffic stop in DeKalb County. Wright's arrest came more than three months after the incident.

"We got a call in May that a child had bruises and scars and was attacked by his uncle," Robertson said. "When we arrived at the home, we immediately called the Special Victim's Unit to further the investigation."

Robertson told FOX 5 the child told his mom he was punished for taking money from his uncle.

In the warrant, Wright allegedly body slammed the child to the floor, punched, kicked, choked and whipped him with a belt so hard that it left bruises and scars.

"He had bruises all over his neck and back," Robertson said.

Also in the warrant, Wright allegedly sent a text to the victim's mom saying "You better come get your son before I kill him."

Wright is charged with aggravated assault, child cruelty and terroristic threats.
