DACULA, Ga. - Gwinnett County Police said two missing girls taken by their mother have been found safe in Henry County, and have been reunited with their father.
Police said Owens is now facing charges of arson for setting her Mitford Lane house on fire, prior to picking up her daughters from school and causing a scare that led authorities Wednesday afternoon to activate a Levi's Call, Georgia’s Amber Alert system. Police believed Owens' erratic behavior, which included strange statements to school officials and relatives, led police to believe the children were in danger.
“She also made odd statements to family and friends, that concerned the world coming to an end,” said Corporal Collin Flynn.
Gwinnett County fire investigators said around 1:45 p.m., a neighbor called 911, concerned there could be a fire in the home. Fire investigators said Owens set fire to some belongings inside the home, but would not elaborate what was set on fire, or why.
Authorities released descriptions of Owens' vehicle, a surveillance image of the woman, and pictures of her two daughters, hoping she would be found quickly. Police called off the alert around 6:30 p.m., and said the girls were in good condition after they were found in Henry County.
Fire officials Owens is in the Henry County Jail. Police said they are still trying to evaluate the mental health of Owens.
