UNION CITY, Ga. - The suspected shoplifter who shot himself inside a Walmart after police officers confronted him has died of his injuries.
Union City Police say 20-year-old Dalmar Steven Johnson died Wednesday at Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital.
When Union City officers confronted the shoplifter inside the Walmart, they said the man pulled out a gun and shot himself.
Shopper Gill St. Germain said he was inside picking up a prescription when he heard the gunshot.
"Everyone went down on the floor, everyone in the prescription area, then they closed the door," St. Germain told FOX 5’s Denise Dillon.
Union City Police said an officer responded to a shoplifting call at the store on Jonesboro Road just after 3 p.m. Wednesday. When the officer saw that the suspect had a gun he called for backup. Other officers raced to the scene and confronted the man.

"Once he was confronted by Union City officers he produced the gun and wouldn't drop it following the officer's commands, then came the self-inflicted gunshot wound," said Officer Chris Murphy.
Police said no officers fired and no one else was hurt. Authorities did not release a name or age of the man; they only described him as an adult male.
Walmart was evacuated for a short time. By Wednesday evening it was back open, even though police tape was still up around one of the entrances.
