CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - Several Clayton County Sheriff's deputies spent the day on Libby Lane on Monday morning, just a few yards from the home were 15-year-old Daveon Coates and his 11-year-old Tatiyana were shot and killed during a home invasion before dawn Saturday morning.
“I just don't understand this. They were just outside playing and laughing with their parents Friday after school. Who kills children? Why would anyone do this?” Veronica Harris asked as she stood near the Coates family home Monday afternoon.
Clayton County Police said the teens were among six children home alone Saturday morning when at least one gunman burst into the home. Investigators said they are still trying to get a better description of the gunman who remains on the run.
“We're dealing with witnesses who are as young as six. They're just not really able to help us after a traumatic situation like this. But we are working with Chattanooga Police to determine if this is connected to a shooting in there yesterday,” Sgt. Ashanti Marbury told FOX 5's Portia Bruner Monday.
Neighbors told Bruner they've never experienced this kind of violence and hope that someone will come forward and tell detectives who is responsible for the vicious crime.
“People have to do the right thing here. If this was your family going through this kind of pain, you'd want someone to tell you who killed your son or daughter. This family deserves to know,” Harris said.
Grief counselors were assigned to South Pointe Middle School and Mundy's Mill High School Monday morning. Clayton County School District spokeswoman Jada Davis those counselors will be on hand as long as necessary for those who knew the sixth grade girl and tenth grade boy.
