The DeKalb County Police Department Traffic Specialists Unit has arrested a suspect they say struck and killed an 8-year-old girl and her mother as they were crossing the street to get to her school bus.

Police say that Ejigayheu Tsegaye hit 8-year-old Tluang Tha Men and her mother, Dawt Chin Sung, on Feb. 16, 2018, when they were entering a crosswalk at the intersection of Rays Road and Central Drive in Stone Mountain.

Tluang died after being taken to the hospital with a critical head injury. Her mother suffered a minor hip injury and was treated at Grady Memorial Hospital, police said.

At the time, investigators told FOX 5 that they believed the bus's stop arm was out and the bus was completely stopped before the mother and daughter crossed the street.

Tsagaye has been charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, passing/overtaking a school bus, and two counts of failure to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk.
