Oprah Winfrey speaks at Agnes Scott College graduation

Media icon and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey delivered the commencement address Saturday at Agnes Scott College in Decatur.

Winfrey received an honorary degree during the May 13 ceremony. It was a sentimental appearance for the star. One of her students from her Leadership Academy in South Africa was among the Class of 2017. She calls the young women at her school her "daughter girls."

Winfrey spoke one-on-one with FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell after the ceremony about seeing her student succeed.

"I did this for all of these girls and I have 300 girls in school all the time..." Winfrey told Mitchell. "It turned out to be one of the greatest rewards of my life to seeing them become educated, fantastic, citizens of the world.

Winfrey hosted the popular talk show "The Oprah Winfrey Show" for 25 years. She now runs her own cable network, OWN, and is the founder of "O, The Oprah Magazine."

Winfrey earned an Academy-Award nomination for her role in "The Color Purple." She appeared in a number of other films including HBO's"The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," which was partly filmed on the campus of Agnes Scott College.

Winfrey was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor, in 2013.

Posse Foundation founder Deborah Bial also received an honorary degree at the commencement.
