Flames tore through a northeast Atlanta home with four people inside late Monday night.

Fire crews said they arrived to find a blanket of smoke coming from the home on Harold Avenue. The smoke was pushing out of the basement of the back side of the house.

A family of four, including a 5-year-old child, was inside the home sleeping when the fire broke out just before midnight.

Two of the family members, who were asleep upstairs, made it out safely. Downstairs, a resident in her 60s was in the back bedroom when fire crews raced inside to find her.

“I can’t stress enough - just a few seconds later, her chance of survival would have gone down dramatically,” Sgt. Cortez Stafford with the Atlanta Fire Department told FOX 5.

A man, who was able to escape the basement, along with the woman, are now being treated for smoke inhalation.

Two pet dogs perished in the fire. The cause is under investigation.
