COBB COUNTY, Ga. - The attorney for the man accused of killing a Cobb County school crossing guard said his client is not prepared to accept a plea.
Lamonte Roosevelt Whitaker, who was charged with vehicular homicide in the first degree and reckless driving, was accused of speed in his red 2016 Ford Focus SE through a school speed zone on November 30, 2017. Police said Whitaker struck 63-year-old Edna Umeh as she directed traffic outside of Lindley Middle School.

Umeh was pronounced dead at the scene. Whitaker had to be cut from his vehicle before being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries.
Thursday, Whitaker’s lawyers told a Cobb County judge they were not yet prepared to reach a plea agreement.
Attorneys for the state said the case could move forward to a jury trial.
