There has been a great deal of emphasis on putting high-power rifles in the hands of police so they will not be outgunned in any active-shooter scenario.

In Atlanta, there has been what is being called an equally important change with a smaller weapon, the handgun.

The Atlanta Police Department looked at a Federal Bureau of Investigation study and decided to make a change from a .40 caliber gun to a .9 mm.

The redesigned gun has both good penetrating power to knock down an assailant, as well as great accuracy.

The Atlanta Police Union said both features are important. There have been some unbelievable scenes played out in the metro area over the last year. Consider for example, a normal stop at a Buckhead burger place that ended with people running for their lives after a man began firing while sitting in the bar area.

In such a scenario, police said their more accurate handgun could be used to put down the gunman while keeping innocent patrons without a scar.

The FBI has also made the change to the redesigned .9 mm.
