CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. - The GBI is investigating the death of Herbert Perkinson, who was found shot in the torso along Interstate 75 early Sunday morning.
Perkinson was taken to Kennestone Hospital where he later died.
At a separate scene in Emerson, the Emerson Police Department and The G.B.I. conducted their investigation of a home invasion, robbery and kidnapping. Investigators confirmed the home on 11th Street is where Perkinson’s lived. Perkinson’s girlfriend told FOX 5's Nathalie Pozo she was home at the time of the home invasion.
“That’s when I jumped out the back door and heard him saying, baby, baby, baby, baby and I just took off running over there,” said Marsha Douglas with tears in her eyes.
Investigators said they are still trying to determine how Perkinson got to Interstate 75 near the Cobb-Cherokee line and where he was shot.
“For someone to be so heartless and ruthless and cold and not consider the fact that everyone has a loved one, to dump them on the side of 75, but I thank GOD for grace and mercy,” said Tracey Knowles Mitchell, Perkinson’s cousin.
Perkinson’s family said he was a devoted father to two children and a family oriented man.
“He was a giver, loving,” said Mitchell. “Every Friday he brought my mom and my dad and his stepdad and his mom lunch.”
His nephew remembered his generosity. “He gave me some money to go shopping to get some new clothes,” said Hunter Tyler.
The family said they cannot understand why this happened to their loved one and had this message for those responsible.
“You will reap just what you sow, you will reap, hallelujah, just what you sow,” said Tat Tyler
