MACON, Ga. - A Bibb County man was arrested after deputies said he shot and bludgeoned his neighbor’s pig.
Deputies were called to the 3300 block of Kings Park Circle just after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday after some construction workers reported hearing gunshots down the road. Immediately after, they told Macon Bibb Animal Welfare Director Sonja Adams that they saw a pig running down the road with a pickaxe in its back.
Adams said a man, identified by deputies as Freddie Phelps Sr., 62, was seen chasing after the pig. He’s accused of shooting the animal and striking it in the back with the pickaxe.
Authorities said the pig’s owner asked Phelps to kill the pig so she could have it processed.
Due to the severity of the pig’s injuries, animal welfare agents decided the best course of action was to end its pain and suffering and put the pig down.
Phelps has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals. He’s being held at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.
