An American Airlines plane flying from Atlanta landed safely in Dallas on Friday evening after a passenger's laptop battery caught fire onboard, officials said.

What we know:

American Airlines flight 2398 was traveling from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport when a passenger's device began smoking.

Flight attendants contained the laptop battery fire using a thermal containment bag, allowing the Airbus A321 to land safely around 6:55 p.m. local time on Friday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The aircraft taxied to its gate under its own power, a spokesperson for American Airlines said in a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta.

Emergency crews met the plane at the gate as a standard safety procedure, and one person received medical attention.

The FAA is investigating the incident.

"We thank our crew for their professionalism and swift response to quickly contain the device," American Airlines said.

What we don't know:

Authorities have not released details regarding the identity or condition of the person who required medical attention. It is also unclear what caused the laptop battery to overheat and catch fire.
