The summer road work season is right around the corner, and improvement projects are lined up all around Georgia.

So this year, Georgia officals are urging you to "drive like you work here."

Officials want you to keep in mind that when you're driving through construction zones in Georgia, you're moving through someone's work space – even if there aren't cubicals or computers.

They want everyone to get home from their job safely, and that includes road crews.

Since 1973, 60 Georgia DOT employees have died in work zone-related incidents.

Deadly wrecks in work zones are trending up. In 2018, there were 52 fatalities and more than 27,000 wrecks.

Statistics show 60 percent of work zone crashes are linked to cars leaving the roadway and rear end collisions, DOT leaders say that often correlates with distracted driving, speeding, fatigue, or driving under the influence.

So Georgia wants to remind you to obey the rules of work zones, pay attention, slow down, and watch for workers.

Also, don't assume a work zone you move through is the same as it was last time. Expect the unexpected, like lane shifts or closures.
