ATLANTA -
Atlanta Police have sent special units to patrol a Southeast Atlanta apartment complex, after drive-by shootings have rattled residents over the past several days.
Residents at the Forest Cove Apartments off New Town Circle told FOX 5 they have been terrified by almost daily shootings with bullets flying at apartments and cars, .
"The challenge we have is trying to determine which two groups are feuding right now. Are they gang-related? Or are some individuals being targeted?" said Major Jeff Glazier, the commander for Zone 3.
Glazier said SWAT officers are patrolling the area in the daytime, while Zone 3 patrols and APEX units will cover the area at night.
The apartment complex has had numerous crime incidents over the past few years, but residents said shootings over the past week have been practically every night.
Residents pointed out to FOX 5 shell casings on the ground, bullet holes on the outside and inside apartments, and numerous bullet holes through cars in and outside the complex.
Neighbor Lakia Thomas showed FOX 5 a series of bullets that flew through her living room and bedroom on two separate nights where she and her children had to duck for cover.
"I'm fixing to send my kids away. They don't feel safe out here. I don't feel safe out here," Thomas said. "I feel like they're waiting on one of our children to die," she said.
FOX 5 had previously spoke to Thomas almost a year ago, when bullets struck her kids' bedroom.
Atlanta Police said officers have met with apartment security to help them modify their patrol times.
Management for the complex wouldn't comment on the shootings, but said they are cooperating with police on the investigation.
City Councilwoman Carla Smith said she and other city officials have met with management to encourage them to step up their security; she said the newest management has hired a security team, but hopes more off-duty officers could be hired as well.
"Off-duty Atlanta Police officers have arresting powers," Smith said.
Smith said she has also encouraged the complex to add more lighting and surveillance cameras.
