Sandy Springs Firefighters from Station number 2 didn't have to go far when they spotted trouble across the street at Slope's BarBQue on Johnson Ferry Road just after 7 a.m. on Dec. 15.
"The guys were standing outside. They're used to seeing smoke coming from the chimney because Slopes starts smoking their meat pretty early, but this was more than usual so they got over here quickly and discovered a fire in the attic," Deputy Chief Mark Duke told FOX 5's Portia Bruner.
Fortunately, no one was injured and the owners were able to salvage quite a bit from the main restaurant area. But the heavy smoke and water damage couldn't come at a worse time for a popular restaurant during the holiday season. Glen McDaniel opened the restaurant at the corner of Johnson Ferry and Sandy Springs Circle said he feels bad for his employees who will be out of work will the store in under repair for the next few weeks. He hopes fire investigators will be able to quickly determine what went wrong and why.
“I'm just grateful those guys saw the fire when they did. This is bad, but I know it could've been much worse," McDaniel said standing in front of the restaurant he opened in 2002.
