ATLANTA - An alleged leader of a violent criminal organization, Gangster Disciples, was arrested by the FBI and other law enforcement officers on Sunday, according to a statement released Monday.
The suspected leader, 38-year-old Shauntay Lamarr Craig, was taken into custody at a residence in Marrero, Louisiana. He is expected to appear before a judge Monday, and will be extradited to Atlanta, Georgia.
Craig, who officials say holds a national leadership role within the organization, was wanted for his alleged involvement in criminal acts related to his “board member” status—a rank he’s reportedly held since 2009.
Authorities say Craig, along with forty-nine other alleged gang members, was indicted on April 28, 2016 by a federal grand jury in Atlanta and in Memphis, Tennessee on federal racketeering and corruption charges. Craig was reportedly the only indicted gang member from this group that had eluded capture.
Officials say the Gangster Disciples organization, a nationwide operation, is believed to have committed numerous murders and robberies, and are alleged to have engaged in extortion plots and drug/narcotics trafficking across the United States.
