An Atlanta father, facing charges after an accidental shooting left his 6-year-old daughter dead, waived his first court appearance on Tuesday.
The shooting happened late Saturday morning at an apartment on Martin Street in Southeast Atlanta. Investigators said the victim, Ja'Mecca Smith, found a loaded handgun between sofa cushions in the apartment. She apparently pulled the trigger and shot herself.
The girl's father, 25-year-old DeMarqo Smith, has been charged with reckless conduct and involuntary manslaughter, according to police. Smith was taken to the Fulton County Jail following his arrest.
He'll go back to court in two weeks.
Police said four other children were inside the apartment when the shooting happened. None of the other children were injured. Ja'Mecca's mother, Kate Milling, was not home at the time.
Milling spoke with FOX 5 Sunday during a candlelight vigil for her child at her home.
"I'm hurt. I'm devastated. My heart is broken," Milling said. "...I just want to talk to her and just touch her one more time and tell her something sweet."
Milling said when Smith briefly left the scene of the shooting before speaking with authorities, he was in shock. "He was hurt and he didn't know how to take it," Milling added.
A fundraising effort is underway to help pay the girl's funeral expenses. More information about that can be found here: https://www.gofundme.com/foreverindia
