Father and son robbed at gunpoint

A terrifying ordeal for a father and son who were robbed Saturday night amidst a crowd of people near Centennial Olympic Park.

The father and son agreed to speak to FOX 5 to warn others about a false sense of security they were lulled into around Centennial Olympic Park.

The victim who wanted to be identified by his first name, Lee, said he and his 13-year-old son were walking to get some food near the park when two men put a gun to their heads.

"I said you gotta be bleeping kidding me, and I promptly got smacked in the face with one of the guns. I handed him my phone and went to reach for my wallet, and they had left before I got my wallet," said Lee.

He said the robbers stole his new I-Phone 6-Plus, but declined to steal his son's older I-phone when his son offered it to them. Lee said he and Harrison had just left the Rialto Theater after attending his daughter's dance recital. They were headed to get something to eat near Centennial Olympic Park when they were robbed near a large crowd attending a show at the Tabernacle nearby.

"We were probably 50 feet from a giant line of people. I really want to let the folks know not to let your guard down. Just the thought of children being in that situation, my own son was in that situation and it's a feeling I"ll never forget till the day I die," said Lee.

Atlanta police told FOX 5 they are checking surveillance video to identify the brazen robbers. Officers said they have constant patrols in the area, but ask everyone to remain vigilant.

"Keep in mind, because you're in a crowded area, does not mean you cannot be a victim of a crime unfortunately," said Officer Lukasz Sajdak.

Harrison is a 13-year-old  Boy Scout, and working toward various badges. He hopes the robbers, believed to be in their teens or early 20's, change their ways before it's too late.

"They're trying to get something the wrong way. You should always try to do it the right way and keep trying if you fail. Don't go the wrong way," said Harrison.

Atlanta police said they believe this is an isolated crime of opportunity. They ask anyone with any information to give them a call.
