Fairburn police officer struck on I-85

FAIRBURN, Ga. - A Fairburn officer was struck by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 85 early Tuesday.

Investigators said Officer T.J. Giddens was working an unrelated traffic collision when the accident happened. 

Officer Giddens was in a cruiser several hundred feet behind that wreck when the big rig struck the car from behind.  The officer was there to warn approaching drivers about the hazard ahead. 

Investigators said the police car was destroyed in the collision.  

According to Fairburn Police, he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and was released just before noon.
