GORDON COUNTY, Ga. - A Calhoun man is facing drunk driving and hit-and-run charges after allegedly crashing his car into a stationary fire engine on Thursday afternoon and driving away from the scene, according to the Gordon County Sheriff's Office.
What we know:
The incident happened around 1 p.m. on Thursday at the intersection of I-75 and Highway 41, where a Gordon County fire truck was stopped in traffic.
After hitting the fire truck, the car drove away from the scene while a passenger was trying to get out of the car. A female acquaintance told deputies she was inside the car when Razo hit the truck and was actively trying to exit the car as he sped away from the crash, the sheriff's office stated.
A fire officer located the suspect's vehicle a few minutes later at a nearby apartment complex and alerted law enforcement, authorities added.
Calhoun police officers and deputy sheriffs responded and located the heavily damaged automobile, which had extensive front and rear damage alongside deployed airbags inside.
Authorities stated they arrested the driver, identified as Jacob Alan Razo, 31, of Calhoun.
Deputies noted Razo appeared intoxicated, repeatedly referred to officers as "bros," and claimed he "was paying for it" in reference to his car.
Razo was booked into jail and charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, and additional traffic offenses, according to the sheriff's office.
The Georgia State Patrol investigated the crash.
Law enforcement noted Razo had previously been arrested in Calhoun for obstructing peace officers and other offenses, the Gordon County Sheriff's Office stated.
What we don't know:
It is unclear whether Razo, his passenger, or any firefighters were injured in the crash.
The sheriff's office did not state how damaged the fire truck was.
