FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. - Deputies said they're performing undercover operations to catch a man impersonating a police officer and tell FOX 5 News he flashed emergency lights to pull over a teenage driver.
Fayette County deputies said the ordeal happened Thursday night around 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of West MacIntosh Road and Grant Road near the small town of Brooks.
Police said the driver in a dark-colored vehicle flashed his emergency lights, and once the 17-year-old driver pulled over, the black man in his 30s dressed in dark grey or black sweats approached her. Upon seeing the individual, the teenager quickly drove away, believing the situation to be suspicious.
Deputies praised the quick thinking of the teenager for quickly fleeing a dangerous situation. No word on the motive of the suspect.
Investigators are working to tie the suspect to similar crimes in surrounding jurisdictions and said Clayton County had recently had reports of a police impostor.
Fayette deputies warn drivers to call 911 if a vehicle that does not appear to be law enforcement attempts to pull you over, and turn on your hazard lights and drive to a well-lit area.
"Our officers are also instructed to try to make the stop in locations that are well-lit. Most traffic stops are going to be conducted by officers in marked vehicles," advises Lt. Robert Fuller of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office. "All traffic stops are going to be made by officers. Look for the badge. Look for the uniform," Fuller said.
