Ceremonial swearing-in for Darline Graham

A swearing-in ceremony was held for Darline Graham Nordone after it was announced that she would replace her brother, the late Lindsey Graham, as interim Senator for South Carolina. 

Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham as sworn in by the Senate Tuesday afternoon.

Her husband, Larry Nordon, held the Bible as Republican Chuck Grassley, the president pro tempore of the Senate, presided over the ceremony.

Graham was appointed Monday by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster to fill the remaining months of her brother’s current term, which expires in January. She will be the first woman to represent the state in the U.S. Senate.

A special election will be held next month to pick a new Republican nominee in the general election for Graham’s seat.

Graham served in the U.S. Senate since 2003 after first being elected in 2002 and was seeking a fifth Senate term after winning the Republican primary last month.

Nordone has worked as an optician and at various state agencies, including the South Carolina Commission for the Blind and the Department of Employment and Workforce. She is married to Larry Nordone but will be known in the Senate as Darline Graham, her legal name.

Graham, 71, died unexpectedly on Saturday in Washington. A preliminary report from the medical examiner said he suffered a tear in his aorta, known as an aortic dissection.
