Community members from Bankhead and the Bowen Homes neighborhood packed Mount Carmel Baptist Church on Campbellton Road, for the public viewing and wake.

The rapper died last week in a fiery crash off Interstate 285. Police said the 40-year-old, whose real name is Carlos Walker, was ejected from a 2016 Audi when the vehicle struck a couple of trees, overturned and burst into flames. Passengers Destini Carter and Deshondria Miller escaped the wreckage.

Funeral services will take place noon Saturday at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church on Fairburn Road NW.

In 2008, Shawty Lo was named MySpace Music Rookie of the Year at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. That year, his hit "Dey Know" was among the most-played rap songs on radio stations nationwide.
