A College Park resident received an enticing phone call purportedly announcing a grant award of $9,000.

Michael Malcolm said the unsolicited call came from the United States Treasury. That is what he was told.

Was it a scam? He thought it might be.

He then received an instruction that convinced him the call was bogus.

The caller told Malcolm to go to a store and purchase a prepaid card in the amount of $200 with an accompanying transfer number to activate that $9,000 grant coming to him.

Malcolm did not do that.

"I'm not stupid," he said.
