Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, 'Mortal Kombat' actor dies at 75

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, an actor well-known for his roles in the film "Mortal Kombat" and TV series "The Man in the High Castle" has died. He was 75.

The entertainer died from complications due to a stroke. His manager, Margie Weiner, told the Associated Press Thursday that he was surrounded by his family in Santa Barbara.

The backstory:

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa started acting at the age of 36, and his career took off in 1987 when he appeared in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Oscar-winning film "The Last Emperor." And through the year, the actor has appeared in various movies like "Pearl Harbor," "Planet of the Apes" and "License to Kill."

But the actor is best-known for his role in the 1995 movie "Mortal Kombat,"playing the character of the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung.  Years later, Tagawa would reprise the character in the 2013 television series "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" and voiced Tsung in the video game Mortal Kombat 11.

In 2005, Tagawa played the Baron in "Memoirs of a Geisha," a film based on the bestselling novel chronicling a young girl’s rise from poverty in a Japanese fishing village to life in high society.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the actor was born in Japan and raised partly on U.S. military bases before moving to Los Angeles, where he taught his own style of martial arts called Chu Shin. 

Tagawa is survived by his children, Calen, Byrnne and Cana, and his grandchildren, River and Thea Clayton.
