ATLANTA - An Atlanta woman said someone set her car on fire while it was in her own driveway.
Kim Simmons said she was asleep inside her southwest Atlanta home with her family early Friday morning. Simmons said her son noticed the fire and by the time firefighters arrived, flames had filled the car.
"I'm just lucky it didn't blow up and catch the house," said Simmons.
She said she feels fortunate that no one was hurt, but she says not having a car will be a challenge. She said she's already going through a lot with health issues and raising her family.
"I'm fighting cancer, I'm struggling with my baby boy who is a special needs child, and I'm raising my two grandkids," said Simmons.
Simmons said she has no idea who would set her 1994 Nissan on fire. The incident report from the fire department simply lists the cause as "undetermined".
While Simmons admits she is angry and sad on the inside, she said she hasn't shed a tear because she has to be strong for her grandchildren. She said the most heartbreaking part of all of this is the two 5-year old boys came up to her and said they wanted to help.
"My grandkids told me to take the Christmas gifts back so I could buy me a new car. I told them I wasn't going to do that," said Simmons.
